COLOR CODE BLUE

Big straightens large framing irregularities for 90º corners, outside off angles, and in place of metal corner bead. Big resists dents and paint chipping, cuts easily with a scissors or utility knife, applies with all-purpose joint compound, and will not rust. Manufactured from Strait-Flex's patented composite material, it is extremely strong and will not fuzz-up when sanding.

  • Use where corner bead is damaged or cracked. Apply directly over existing corner bead.
  • Use in place of metal corner bead.
  • Outside corners.
  • Continuous 90º soffit runs where splicing is not wanted.
  • Straightens large framing irregularities.
  • Slotted edges ensure superior bond.

PREPARATION

Run your taping knife over the surface of the drywall and remove any high spots. If the knife hits a screw head, set the screw a little deeper. Use a drywall rasp to clean up edges, if needed.

Measure wall height and subtract 1/2”. Measure and cut Big using a scissors or utility knife.

Fold Big in half at center crease with print size facing each other. (2) For outside corners, fold more than the desired angle with print side facing wall. For inside corners, fold less than desired angle with print side facing out.

Most professionals prefer to cut the ends of Big at a 45º angle.

Properly mix all-purpose compound per manufacturer’s  directions. If applying Big over painted surfaces, add Strait-Flex’s Super-Bond or latex paint to enhance bondability.

STEP ONE

With a 4”or 5” taping knife, apply a smooth, liberal coat of compound to corner.

Press Big into the wet compound. Adjust if necessary to create a straight line.

Wipe down tight with taping knife using a little additional pressure on the outer edges of Big.

(7) Immediately apply a light skim coat of compound over surface of Original. Wipe down tight and smooth.
Let dry completely over several hours or overnight.

STEP TWO

Use taping knife to detect and remove any high spots or dried clumps of compound.

(8) With a 6”or 8” taping knife, apply your final coat of compound feathering the compound beyond previous coat. For inside corners, a very light coat of compound is all that’s needed. Lightweight compound used in this step makes sanding much easier.

Let dry completely over several hours or overnight.

STEP THREE

(9) Sand lightly with 120 grit sandpaper. Big will not fuzz-up like paper or mesh tapes.

HELPFUL HINTS

Use a stainless steel mud pan to carry and re-mix compound as you work. Keeping your compound smooth and free of air pockets and dried clumps of compound, will deliver a smooth finish.

Have a five gallon bucket of water with a durable sponge handy for cleaning tools.

When painting, apply a base coat of drywall primer to seal the compound and assure an even paint finish.
